Provider Update October 20, 2017
The Cost of Poverty
The populations with whom we work encounter obstacles at every turn. There are 46 million living in poverty and 1/4 of our children live in poverty. We know this, but many of us have never lived in true poverty, nor have we met the challenges that many of the families we serve have met.
CareSource, Georgia's newest managed care organization, approached Together Georgia early this year and offered to do a poverty simulation at the Georgia Conference on Children and Families in tandem with ThinkTank. We were uncertain whether or not the topic was too basic for our audience, so we vetted it with some of our providers. The response was unanimous, "Yes, this would be great! We often forget the challenges our families deal with and this will be a great reminder." Not only is it a reminder, it will help you for a brief period of time experience what the families we serve experience every day. The difference being, at the end of the day, you have the good fortune to return to your life above the poverty line. We hope many of you will be at the conference next week. We trust you will experience your work at a different level after experiencing the Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE). Linked at youtu.be/cC_ZGqosCfM is an introductory video to COPE.
