2016 Georgia Conference on Children and Families

Georgia Conference on Children and Families
November 2-4, 2016
Marriott Augusta at the Convention Center

We encourage all of our TG members to participate in the conference. The conference evaluations in previous years highly rate the GCCF networking opportunity. There will be approx. 250+ DFCS,  DJJ, and DBHDD staff along with other collaboratives who will be attending the conference. There were more than 500 participants in the 2015 event. Providers will have opportunity to mingle with key state leaders, professional experts and child welfare peers.

Welcome to this year’s conference, Putting Purpose into Practice!

Many songs have lyrics associated with how fast a lifetime passes, “Don’t Blink”, “Cat’s in the Cradle”, “If I Could Turn Back Time”….  Attending my final Georgia Conference of Children and Families prior to my retirement next June, I can attest to the truth in those lyrics and many others.   My child welfare career began in 1976 in a runaway shelter in downtown Dayton, Ohio. I traveled seven years through Elks Aidmore in Conyers, 23 years loving our wonderful therapeutic community at Inner Harbour, stretching more than I thought I could for three years at DFCS and finally ending at Together Georgia.

As you, I have seen many changes in how our services are provided.  Heck, there was a time not too long ago that we had phones with rotary dials and we were impressed with electric typewriters.  Technology alone has greatly expanded our knowledge, hyper-driven our communications and made us all on-call 24/7.  I never would have imagined back in the 70’s (while I was listening to the Eagles and Rolling Stones) the world we find ourselves in today.

The purpose of this conference is to provide you nuggets so you might learn how to better navigate in today’s world and perhaps be a little more proficient at your vocation.  It is a wonderful eclectic gathering of caring people from all sectors of Georgia’s public-private child and family service providers.   The many offerings touch upon practice, operations, policy and leadership in a variety of settings.  Through the years GCCF has embraced the notion of true public-private partnership.  The work you do requires all of us to come together and determine how best we can positively impact the lives of those we serve.  It is my sincere hope that you experience networking, fellowshipping and learning opportunities at this year’s GCCF that will assist you going forward.

I feel extremely blessed to have worked along side so many of you over the past four decades and am looking forward to the next chapter in my life’s journey.  Enjoy the 2016 GCCF, Putting Purpose into Practice conference and may you seize all the days in front of you!

Be a Hopegiver,

Ron Scroggy
